Arboretum - Central Experimental Farm
Photo by Richard Hinchcliff, and Friends
of the Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa

This collection of trees and shrubs covers 35 ha of land near the Prince of Wales traffic circle. It was established in 1889 and the oldest trees date back to the 1880's. It is open from sunrise to sunset, and admission is free.

Well over 2400 distinct species and varieties can be viewed. Every tree that can be grown in this climatic zone is featured. A number of trees from other climatic zones can also be seen, notably:

  • The Tulip tree (native to zone 5B) was planted in the 1920s and was killed to the snow line for several consecutive years until it grew a shoot that has survived ever since.

Friends of the Farm Donor Tree Program

The Donor Tree Program provides a method through which you can directly contribute to the growth of the Central Experimental Farm Arboretum. Tree Donations are used to preserve and enhance the arboretum. Since the program's inception in 1991, donors have contributed over 700 trees. If you wish any further information please contact Friends of the Farm at 613 230-3276.
