For immediate release
August 5, 2010
Ottawa, August 5, 2010—On Saturday, August 7, this year’s Ice Cream Festival will showcase the agricultural basics behind a favourite summer treat, while visitors of all ages have fun exploring Ottawa’s urban farm.
For the 2010 Ice Cream Festival, the Canada Agriculture Museum is proud to be hosting over 600 underprivileged children for an unforgettable hands-on farm experience, thanks to a grant from TELUS.
“People often tell us that the Museum inspires their children to think about the animals, crops, careers, science and technology that go into food production,” says Kerry-Leigh Burchill, Director General of the Canada Agriculture Museum. “Making these educational experiences accessible to more children benefits the entire community.”
Regular admission applies, but funds raised through additional activities at this event will benefit the Museum’s Youth Fund, providing transportation, program fees, supplies, and equipment enabling children with financial challenges to visit the Museum.
Highlights include:
- From Cow to Cone: Find out how much milk a cow produces each day. How many ice cream cones does that make? The quantities are truly amazing!
- Ice Cream Making: Try your hand at an old-fashioned manual ice cream maker. Various flavours will be made throughout the day, with lots of taste-testing opportunities! Thank you to Neilson for its generous donation of cream and milk.
- Other Chilly Choices: Discover how other frozen desserts are made from soy, coconut milk, and goat’s milk, and compare them by tasting various samples.
- Ottawa Police Service—Child Print Program: Child Print provides families with practical information, should a child go missing. It strives to make communities safer for children, and teaches children and adults streetwise safety tips.
- Ottawa Fire Services—Fire Safety House: This mobile unit highlights electrical hazards, cooking hazards, and the dangerous use of fireplaces and candles, and reinforces the importance of fire safety planning.
- The Cowguys: One of The Cowguys delights audiences with a performance expertly blending circus, western, and magic skills with dexterity and danger—juggling, acrobatics, magic tricks, and more.
- Milk Production Around the World: Discover how various mammals—goats, sheep, buffalo, and horses—are raised around the world for milk production.
