Barnyard Break at the Canada Agriculture Museum

OTTAWA, February 22, 2008
For immediate release

The Canada Agriculture Museum launches its 2008 season with its annual Barnyard Break during the March school breaks from March 1 to 16. Parents and children looking for March Break learning and fun will find it at the Canada Agriculture Museum’s Barnyard Break!

Visitors will be able to participate in or watch informative demonstrations such as butter making and tasting, meeting the cow family or learning all about pigs by taking a “Pig Quiz”. In addition to learning about many farm animals such as the Museum’s Canadian-breed horse, visitors can also groom a calf, watch the afternoon milking and, on weekends, warm up with a wintry recipe. A favourite March Break children’s activity is suggesting names for the Museum’s calves.

The following are some of the activities, displays and demonstrations that will be featured at the Museum during Barnyard Break:

Groom a Calf (9:30)
Visitors will have the chance to meet a calf and help one of the Museum’s Guides with the grooming.

All About Milk (10:00, 1:30)
Visitors can follow milk’s journey from the cow to the corner store.

Small Animal Tour (10:30)
Visitors can take part in a guided tour to meet the goats, sheep and rabbits and learn all about the similarities and differences between the sheep and the goats!

Children’s Story and Craft (11:00, 2:30)
Children can have fun making a craft related to the featured story.

Pig Quiz (12:00)
Are pigs in fact dirty animals? Visitors can find out the answer to this question and many more during the Pig Quiz.

Butter Making (1:00)
Visitors will be surprised to learn how simple it is to make this tasty food. Butter tool artefacts and lots of visitor participation add to this demonstration.

Meet the Cow Family (2:00)
What is the difference between a beef cow, a steer, a bull and a bull-calf? This demonstration will answer visitors' questions regarding the bovine vocabulary and beef breeds.

Saddle Up! (3:00)
For this demonstration, visitors can learn about Nel, the Museum's Canadian-breed horse, and her tack, and then try their hand at saddling up our wooden horse.

Help Us Name Our Calves and Our New Wooden Milking Cow! (Ongoing)
Visitors of all ages are invited to give suggestions to name our recently-born calves and our new demonstration wooden milking cow.

Warm Up With a Hot Chocolate (weekends only at 10:00, 11:30, 2:30, 3:30)
On weekends, while tasting a hot chocolate, visitors can learn interesting facts about the origins and cultivation of chocolate.
