Barnyard Break at the Canada Agriculture Museum

OTTAWA, February 20, 2009
For immediate release

The Canada Agriculture Museum launches its 2009 season with its annual Barnyard Break during the March school breaks from March 1 to 8 (Quebec) and March 14 to 22 (Ontario). Parents and children looking for March Break learning and fun will find it at the Canada Agriculture Museum’s Barnyard Break!

Visitors will be able to participate in or watch informative demonstrations such as maple taffy making and tasting, meeting the cow family or learning all about pigs by taking a “Pig Quiz”. In addition to learning about many farm animals, visitors can also groom a calf, watch the afternoon milking and, on weekends, visitors can help one of the Museum’s friendly interpreters make buttermilk pancakes. A favourite March Break children’s activity is suggesting names for the Museum’s recently born calves.

The following are some of the activities, displays and demonstrations that will be featured at the Museum during Barnyard Break:

Rabbit Care (9:30)
Visitors will learn interesting facts about the life-cycle of this farm favourite and will also be able to meet the rabbits and caress their silky fur.

All About Milk (10:00, 1:30)
Visitors can follow milk’s journey from the cow to the corner store.

Saddle Up! (10:30)
For this demonstration, visitors can learn about Nel, the Canadian-breed horse, and her tack, and then try their hand at saddling up the Museum's wooden horse.

Pig Quiz (12:00)
Are pig’s in fact dirty animals? Visitors can find out the answer to this question and many more by taking the Pig Quiz.

Maple Taffy Making and Tasting (1:00)
Visitors will discover the steps to make maple taffy, and other maple products, and will have the opportunity to taste a sample of maple taffy.

Meet the Cow Family (2:00)
Do you know the difference between beef, steer, bull and bull-calf? The demonstration "Meet the Cow Family" will answer visitors' questions regarding the bovine vocabulary and beef breeds.

Groom a Calf (3:00)
Visitors will have the chance to meet a calf and help one of the Museum’s Guides with the grooming.

Help Us Name Our Calves (ongoing)
Visitors of all ages are invited to give suggestions to name the Museum's calves and our new wooden demonstration milking cow.

Butter Making (10:00 and 2:30, weekends only)
Visitors will be surprised to learn how simple it is to make this tasty food. Butter artefacts and lots of visitor participation add to this demonstration.

Buttermilk Pancakes Making and Tasting (11:00 and 3:30, weekends only)
Visitors can help one of our friendly interpreters make buttermilk pancakes in the Demonstration Kitchen and taste the final product with maple syrup!
