Electromagnetic Detector

Electromagnetic Detector

This portable device works on the basis of electromagnetic measurement to allow farmers to “see” sub-soil anomalies in their fields such as areas of saline soil. As saline soil is a better conductor of electricity, the meter on the device shows a strong reading when it passes over an area of salinity that may not be visible on the surface of the field. Farmers use this data to take remedial action to make that part of the field suitable for the cultivation of crops. Although many other companies have since introduced similar technology, the EM15 designed by Geonics Limited was the first in the world!

The Canada Agriculture Museum featured this electromagnetic detector in celebration of National Science and Technology Week, October 14 to 23, 2011.
